Knife safety and basic carving skills

What to expect

Two of the most common questions I get asked as a professional survival instructor are:

1. When should I get my kid a knife? and

2. How do you sharpen a knife?

Let’s address those concerns and teach young adventurers to safely use skills to get the most out of a tool that has stood the test of time. We do separate this class by grade and general skill level of a specific age group.  For example, a group of 12-year-olds may be carving a wizards face into a hiking stick, whereas younger kids may be carving soap with butter knives or making a tent stake. Every segment covers knife safety and the most common safe knife techniques to aid in adventures and carving skills.  It is the individual carving projects that change from age group to age group.  We also discuss the basics of knife care, and different ways to teach about knives for those not quite ready for the real thing.

Who is this class for

Anyone who may ever use a knife.  As mentioned above it is up to you to decide where you want your adventurer to begin their journey.  If you think your adventurer is ready for actual carving that is great, but for those not exactly there yet, check out our wooden knife and butter knife options on the calendar.  If you have any doubt, contact us and we can talk about all the options until you find one that is right for you.
